Inverting amplifier

An inverting amplifier based on an operational amplifier is shown in Fig. 1.

By definition, an inverting amplifier flips (inverts) the input signal and, depending on the resistance ratios of resistors Rin and Rf at the output Vout, amplifies / attenuates / repeats the input voltage:

Vout = –Vin × (Rf / Rin)

The gain of an operational amplifier can be either positive (amplification) or negative (attenuation) and equal to one (repetition).
