Rohde & Schwarz and its 4K product portfolio at IBC 2015: more than just resolution

Rohde & Schwarz and its 4K product portfolio at IBC 2015: more than just resolution

08/04/2015

At IBC 2015 in Amsterdam from September 11 to 15, Rohde & Schwarz will present its new products under the motto: "Rohde & Schwarz 4K: more than just resolution". The company's product portfolio has long supported the 4K video format. This year, the 4K enhancement to the VENICE ingest and production server has been added for high-quality 4K studio productions. The solutions offered by the broadcast and media specialist can be found in hall 7, booth E25.

Easily manage large data volumes

Rohde & Schwarz will present a number of new products that optimize post production and broadcast workflows. The next generation of the R&S CLIPSTER mastering station will make its debut at IBC. Based on a completely new hardware architecture, the R&S CLIPSTER will bring I/O, image processing and codec acceleration to a new level. This is especially good news for high-end post production workflows, e.g. in 4K UHD, with high frame rates, or using Rec. 2020. The R&S CLIPSTER grows with the customer’s requirements, ranging from a starter version through a dedicated IMF workflow version to a mastering station offering the full scope of functions.

4K in live production

The proven R&S VENICE ingest and production server is now even better aligned with the requirements of live studio productions. With the R&S VENICE 4K, the requirements of high-quality 4K studio productions can be met with the efficiency of HD productions. Rohde & Schwarz DVS storage solutions focus on high availability by offering comprehensive backup options that are essential especially in mission-critical workflows.

Taking encoding and multiplexing to a new level

The R&S AVHE100 headend for operators of terrestrial and satellite networks is scalable from SD through to 4K/UHD. The encoding and multiplexing solution to be showcased at IBC will offer enhanced performance in an even smaller space thanks to an even more powerful equipment generation. Up to 33 MPEG-4 SD or eleven MPEG-4 HD encoders fit into only one height unit. Only two height units will hold 4K/UHD with 10-bit resolution. Also on display for the headend will be a new hybrid redundancy concept that significantly increases availability at moderate cost. The concept no longer requires external switching (e.g. via a crossbar), nor a higher-level control system. Another new feature is seamless switching between national and regional content.

Successful transmitter technology

Rohde & Schwarz has brought in many contracts for its state-of-the-art transmitter systems over the past few months. ETV, Serbia's national broadcasting agency, is using Rohde & Schwarz transmitters for the third and final phase of its transition to DVB-T2. For this project, Rohde & Schwarz is providing high-power and medium-power transmitters as well as gap fillers. Analog TV broadcasts are scheduled to be entirely discontinued in 2015. Radiotelevisión de Veracruz, the public broadcaster in the Mexican state of Veracruz, placed four R&S THU9 digital high-power transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz into operation in late 2014.

DVB-T2 test receiver to support HEVC

The R&S ETL TV analyzer, the well-established reference receiver, will soon also support the HEVC standard. Rohde & Schwarz will present a technological preview at its booth. The demo will provide a detailed insight into how the R&S ETL analyzes DVB T2 signals, detects HEVC-encoded video signals and outputs them over IP interfaces for external decoding and picture display.

The Rohde & Schwarz product portfolio will be on display in hall 7, booth E25.
