The first scientific measurement of Mount EverestThe first scientific measurement of Mount Everest was made in 1856. It turned out that the height equals 29000 feet (8839 m). In order to avoid the accusation that the calculation is very approximate that is not worth trusting (the round number are very rare) it was decided to announce the height of 29002 feet.
